Beautiful example of “journalistic” stupidity. Ted Gioia posted an item from Nieman about the limited opportunities for indie “journalists”. One “journalist” commented:
Pretty hard to maintain democracy without a free and independent press. Pretty bleak when everyone I know not in a major city gets all their news from Facebook and/or TikTok.
If you really wanted to supply a need and make money, you’d ask WHY people use Facebook and Tiktok. What are they getting from those two “authoritarian” sources that they’re NOT getting from your “democracy”?
The answer is simple. We want NEWS, which means TELLING US WHAT IS HAPPENING. We do not want “democracy”, which means contempt, hatred, and arrogance.
Why in the holy fuck would anyone WANT to be treated like shit? Why would anyone PAY to be treated like shit?
(Sidenote for fairness, the original article in Nieman is NOT arrogant, just a straightforward summary of a survey without any attitudes or loaded words.)
