At the start of 2025 I vowed to pull away from the tortures of 2020. Three years of horrible nastiness from all levels of government and business made me hard and cold. I don’t like being hard and cold. I’d rather feel proud of doing the right thing.
I’m also trying to restore (where possible) the broader analog life that I lived much earlier. Some of it is unavailable due to aging, but most can be Ctrl-Zed.
When I moved here in 1990, newspapers had been an important part of analog life, partly for the news and mostly for the entertaining features. By habit I subscribed to the Spokesman and mounted their yellow plastic box below my mailbox. I soon realized that the Spokesman was NOT entertaining. Their cartoonist and editorials constantly mocked ordinary non-elite people. I stopped subscribing but never bothered to remove the box.
Since the Spokesman turned non-profit this year, it’s also pulling away from the boring partisan crap and the tiresome contempt. This week, thanks to one old-fashioned entertaining bit of prose, the incremental improvement clicked into a subscription.

And this morning the first PAPER was reliably delivered to the same box. Feels good. It’s an important signal of return.
