Reward crime, punish honesty 2

We’re into fire season now, expected at some point every summer. We had a blessedly cool June, but nature eventually catches up. Tomorrow we’ll get some wind, not enough to notice in cool weather, enough to explode fires right now. The Weather Bureau is giving a precise and clear warning:

When you see a Red Flag Warning in effect, it means conditions are critical for rapid fire spread—no sparks, no flames, no exceptions. Practice wildfire safety by obeying burn bans, avoiding use of spark-producing equipment, and keeping cars off dry grass.

Admirable but futile. The people who read these warnings don’t need the warnings, and the people who need the warnings don’t give a fuck. There are always rural assholes who think a windy day is a great time to burn up some leftover branches or weld a trailer or kill weeds with a blowtorch. There are always urban assholes who think fireworks are “USA! USA! USA! The sound of freedom” or some such insane goddamn shit. In recent years the WORST danger by far is homeless arsonists. The satanic city encourages the arsonists to camp exactly where they can cause the most damage, and the satanic city gives them lighters to light the fires.
