Wasn’t forced

Obvious comparison: Constant software updates are the modern version of Forced Obsolescence, previously practiced in cars and women’s fashion.

Better thought: No, it’s not the same.

GM changed the looks of its cars every year so status-seekers could lord it over lesser neighbors. Fashion changed hemlines and colors and shapes every year so rich ladies could outdo middle-class ladies.

In the 50s the annual change DIDN’T SHUT DOWN your old car. If you didn’t care about showing off you could buy a Ford Mainline with six and stick and keep it for 20 years while the fancy folks moved in and out of wraparound windshields, tailfins, and quad headlights. An unfashionable lady could maintain her well-made dresses for 10 years while hemlines moved up and down and boobs went out and in.

Modern updates are FORCED if you want to continue operating in “society” at all.
