Meteorologists talk about thermal profiles, which are normally way up in the atmosphere. Right now we have 51 degrees by the river (near my house) and 31 on the mountain. There are 40s and 50s on all sides of the 31.
I don’t recall seeing such a drastic gradient strictly by altitude. When a front passes, it usually shows a clear line on the map by geography, not by altitude.
