Language update

Before 2010, I was listening to radio and TV, which provided plenty of material for new words and grammar forms. Since I threw away the TV in 2011 and the radio in 2020, I haven’t done many Language Updates.

Finally we have two items worthy of mention. Both are verb forms. One has deregularized and the other has regularized.

= = = = =

Deregularized: Pet as in applying an affectionate hand to a dog. This seems to have changed about 2 years ago, maybe a little earlier.

Formerly the past form was regular:

I petted him and he calmed down.

Now it has deregularized:

I pet him and he calmed down.

It could be following bet, let and set.

= = = = =

Regularized: Grind. This seems to be very recent and sudden.

Formerly the past form was strong:

All TV production ground to a halt after the strike.

Now it’s regular:

All TV production grinded to a halt after the strike.
