Philosophical dream

A rare plotted dream tonight. I was wandering through the woods with a Chinese hermit who had made little shelters for himself from piles of tires. At the end of the dream he told me:

“If you don’t want to be rich you have more freedom. It’s the same in every system.”

Not wildly dramatic or surprising, but the explicit quoting inside the dream was obviously meant to be a message. So here it is.

= = = = =

If the message was meant for me, I think it might be about popularity. Money is the most common measure of status, but popularity is more direct. I’ve been worrying lately about the dropoff in “likes” and “views” of the blog. It’s clear right now that writers who are seeking clicks and subscriptions must blindly follow the official line. Algorithms rigidly enforce and monetize orthodoxy by measuring popularity. If you want to say unorthodox things (whether right or wrong) you can’t worry about status as expressed by money or clicks.

The tyranny goes beyond taking the Correct Side of the Current Obligation. You also get in trouble for NOT MENTIONING the Current Obligation at all. Politicians and influencers who aren’t interested in The Current Obligation, or who simply want to stay inside their own areas of expertise, are punished. We must cry the required number of tears.
