Mean vs median

A classic case…

Some literary type on Substack stated as a fact that the average person reads 12 books per year. Others came in fast to give the real fact: the normal or typical person reads 1, maybe 2. The literary type was using mean, which is always pulled up by outliers like literary types or rich fuckheads. The commenters were using reality, which is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS better described by median and mode.

If I had control of the press, I’d enforce the rules of metrology and meaningful representation ferociously. If you ever use mean as an average; or present a raw number without percentage or context; or use fake numbers and fake definitions that change to please the party or the Dow; or present the last part of a cop video without the first part that proves why the cop had to kill the criminal; you’re GONE. No more broadcasts, no more publications. Banned forever.
