Not trying hard enough

Print media ought to be improving their products to fight the digital onslaught. Instead they’re lowering quality.

This isn’t connected to AI. So far AI hasn’t made any difference in products, and I suspect it ultimately won’t matter much. It will just waste a whole fucking bunch of money and effort and time.

The digital onslaught began around 2005. Print advocates have been wringing their hands but not taking the appropriate steps. In the few magazines and new books I buy regularly, I’m seeing LESS interesting material, not more.

I’ve been subscribing to Collectible Automobile since April 2000. They print six issues a year, and until now I’ve always kept each issue. Some issues were packed with good stuff (for my interests), others were sparser but worth rereading. For the first time in 26 years, today’s issue contained nothing remotely interesting. I leafed through it then tossed it.
