Bob Chase, one of the current state legislators from the Spokane area, has proposed a different way of separating Bezos Manor from the potentially legitimate State of Washington. Instead of creating two new states, which is UTTERLY IMPOSSIBLE, he proposes two semi-autonomous ‘regions’ without changing the federally recognized state. His bill is short on details, only laying out a task force to work on it.
This is the first NEW and ALMOST PRACTICAL political idea I’ve heard in my life.
A couple of thoughts, since we’re playing with fantastic science fiction:
1. These two divisions already exist in Federal “law”, which could make the change more digestible. The state is divided into two districts with separate Federal “courts.”

The gray area is Bezos Manor, and the three colorful zones are subdistricts of the possibly legitimate part.
2. The change could be made without inventing a new entity. Just redefine the two big sections as Counties, and redefine the existing Counties as Townships. Since Townships never took hold in the west, there’s no existing structure to abolish. Townships are on the map but don’t have functions. In the midwest, Townships still serve some functions like road maintenance. Counties have considerable autonomy in existing “law”, and a single Supercounty would have far more economic bullypower than the existing smaller Counties.
Many counties in the west are larger than eastern states, so these somewhat larger counties wouldn’t be entirely out of proportion.
