Vinyl siding

Zoning codes and insurance quite properly worry about defensible spaces. In a fire-prone area you need to avoid spreaders.

I don’t understand why vinyl siding is allowed ANYWHERE, let alone fire-prone zones. Today a large apartment building burned, leaving a dozen people homeless. It appears that embers from the fire drifted north and torched a wheatfield as well. The apt fire wasn’t caused by weather; today was 85 with a light breeze, no storms. The giant apt development is all vinyl siding!

Anything can melt and burn vinyl. A cigarette near the wall, a barbecue near the wall. This happens repeatedly, even in winter.
