1. Mechanical jargon is poorly represented in dictionaries. When I was working in printing and construction I tried to look up the terms we used and never found them in Websters.
2. We commonly attribute unpleasant things like diseases to other countries.
Here’s a good example of both facts!
From Reddit’s Road Signs section, a sign for an auto repair shop shows an old monkey wrench as the icon.
French call it an Englishman or English key.
Hungarians call it a French key.
Germans call it a Frenchman.
Danes call it a Swedish key.
Czechs call it a French kiss, which is the best of the bunch, since the wrench does have lips.
Makes me wonder if monkey wrench also refers to the lips. I always figured it meant clumsy compared to proper sized wrenches.
