Little pleasures

The best pleasures in life are “after all” moments. It still works after all, I have enough after all, I can still do the task after all.

On Wednesday I deinstalled the air conditioner, part of annual winterizing. It’s a complicated task with a heavy lift that has to be done fast, so I focus tightly on the steps. The process itself went easier than usual because I’m in better shape this year. But the tight focus claimed a small casualty: While carrying the AC through the house, the trailing plug snagged the cord of a clock and pulled it off the table. The front popped off and the plastic case chipped.

First response while still in Git-R-Done mode: Tossed the clock and ordered a new one.

Immediate revert: An animist doesn’t toss a loyal servant so casually. Is it still alive? Plugged it in, still runs smoothly. Glued the chip back into the case, now the loyal servant can do its duty again.

The clock is proud of its continued service after all, and I’m proud that I can still carry stuff and fix stuff.

Clock was made in the 1960s. I bought it from ebay around 2010, and it’s been serving me for 16 years so far. It was previously seen in these pages after the long power outage in 2015.
